Beban Outdoor Learning Centre

CITY OF NANAIMO

Beban Outdoor Learning Centre is a fenced yard adjacent to the Beban Park Social Centre’s classroom offering daycare, summer camps, and after school programs for preschool and elementary aged children. Although the outdoor space predominately services the classroom programs, it is also open-to and enjoyed-by the community before and after hours.

Lanarc was engaged by the City of Nanaimo (the City) in 2021 to complete a conceptual design assignment for the Outdoor Learning Centre to address accessibility concerns, improve safety, and create a more functional space that better suits programming needs.

In 2022, Lanarc was reengaged by the City to see the project through to implementation. Key features of the final design include, an accessible ramp to the building entrance, outdoor classroom, accessible wood deck platforms around existing trees, expanded sport court, loose parts play storage, native planting in key locations, wood platform “stage”, a peak-a-boo portal, and improved entrance into the space.
