John Hendry / Trout Lake Park Renewal Plan

Vancouver Parks Board

John Hendry Park (also referred to as Trout Lake) is known to Vancouverites as an oasis in the centre of the city, providing a get-away to nature within minutes of the urban core. The John Hendry Park Renewal Plan is a playbook for phased enhancements at this well-used destination park.

A key objective was to dovetail engineering and park naturalization goals, reconnecting Trout Lake into the broader area’s stormwater network and addressing water quality issues in the isolated lake which currently consumes thousands of cubic metres of potable water each year. Lanarc staff worked with Kerr Wood Leidel engineers to dovetail park with stormwater planning. The result are actionable steps on creek daylighting, water quality enhancements, and future disconnection of potable water use.

Another outcome realized through the planning process was creation of a cultural focus area, to be co-designed with local First Nations and Indigenous peoples manifesting the Park Board’s reconciliation and decolonization commitments in a visible and tangible way.

Through a multi-phase engagement program, thousands of people shared their aspirations for John Hendry Park. The Renewal Plan brings these ideas together into actionable steps to improve ecosystem habitat, connectivity, and community enjoyment for years to come.
